Checkr (checkr)

About this repository

This is not our API. This repository is an independent, third-party profile of a company's publicly available API surface, maintained by API Evangelist. API Evangelist does not operate, host, resell, or support this company's APIs, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the company unless stated on the profile.

Where the information came from. Everything here is assembled from material a member of the public can reach with a browser and no credentials — the company's own website, developer portal and documentation, the specifications it publishes for public use (OpenAPI, AsyncAPI, JSON Schema, apis.json, llms.txt and similar), its public repositories, and its public status, pricing and changelog pages. Nothing here is obtained by breaching a system, defeating an access control, or using credentials of any kind.

The rating is an independent assessment. The Kin Score and Agent Readiness rating are independently calculated scores of a company's public API artifacts, produced by API Evangelist against a published rubric. They are not certifications, endorsements, security assessments, or audits, and they score published artifacts — not the quality, safety, or security of the software.

Corrections, re-scores, and removal are free. No partnership, contract, or purchase is required, and you do not need to justify the request.

  • Something wrong? Open an issue on this repository, or email info@apievangelist.com.
  • Published something new? Ask for a re-score and we will re-run the rating.
  • Want the listing taken down? Say so and we will honor it. The profile is reduced to your company name, a factual description, and a link to your own site, and the company is recorded as unrated — never scored zero for having asked.

Response times. Acknowledgement within one business day; removal or restriction within two business days; corrections and re-scores within five business days.

Not from the company, and here with a question? You are welcome here — we would rather be the front line and point you the right way than have a good report go nowhere. What this repository can answer is narrow, though, so it is worth knowing who you are actually looking for:

  • A question about how the API works, an account, billing, or a bug in the service — that is the company's own support, not us. We profile this API; we do not operate it and cannot see your account.
  • A bug in an open-source project we only catalog — file it on that project's own repository. This has happened with a real and correct bug report that reached us instead of the people who could fix it, which helped nobody.
  • Anything about this listing itself — the description, the tags, the rating, a missing or wrong artifact — is ours. Open an issue here.
  • Not sure, or something general about API Evangelist or APIs.io — open an issue on the APIs.io Inbox and we will route it.

This repository contains no software, and we will never ask you to download anything. There is no build, release, installer, or binary here — only text and machine-readable API descriptions, so there is nothing here that can be "corrupt" or need "repairing". Any issue, comment, or email claiming otherwise and offering a download link is not from us and is hostile. Do not follow the link; it is a lure. Report it to GitHub and, if you like, tell us at info@apievangelist.com so we can take it down.

On a security or compliance team? Email info@apievangelist.com with security in the subject line and you will get a person, not a form. We will tell you exactly which public URLs this profile was built from so your team can see the same surface we did, and we will take the listing down on request while you work through it.

Full detail: Where this data comes from

Checkr is a technology-driven background check platform for employment screening. Its REST API lets employers, staffing firms, and platform partners run compliant background checks programmatically - creating candidates, sending invitations, ordering packages, and retrieving reports composed of individual screenings (SSN trace, county/state/national/federal criminal searches, sex offender registry, motor vehicle records, and education/employment verifications). The API also covers adverse action workflows, subscriptions and continuous checks, node/hierarchy and geo account structure, documents, Form I-9, and webhooks for event-driven report status updates. Authentication is HTTP Basic auth with a secret API key; Checkr Partner integrations use OAuth.

APIs

Checkr Candidates API

Create, list, retrieve, and update the candidate records that background checks are run against, and request PII removal. Candidates hold the personal information (name, DOB, SSN, addresses, driver license, work authorization) used to order reports and screenings.

Checkr Invitations API

Send candidates a hosted invitation to submit their own information and consent, then create, list, retrieve, and cancel those invitations. Invitations order a package once the candidate completes the flow, removing the need to collect PII directly.

Checkr Reports API

Create, retrieve, update/upgrade, complete, and review reports - the top-level container for a candidate's background check that aggregates individual screenings, addresses, documents, an ETA, and an overall assessment result (clear/consider).

Checkr Screenings API

Retrieve the individual screening components nested under a report - SSN trace, county/state/national/federal criminal searches, sex offender registry search, global watchlist, and motor vehicle report - each with its own status and records.

Checkr Verifications API

List and retrieve education and employment verification screenings for a report, plus manage the supporting candidate-provided schools, employers, driver licenses, and professional licenses used to verify history.

Checkr Packages API

List and retrieve the packages (bundles of screenings such as Basic+, Essential, and Professional) and programs configured on your account that determine which screenings a report includes and what it costs.

Checkr Documents API

Upload, list, and retrieve documents attached to a candidate - driver license images, motor vehicle records, and other supporting files required to process or dispute a screening.

Checkr Adverse Actions API

Create, list, retrieve, and cancel FCRA-compliant adverse action workflows against a report, including the pre-adverse and post-adverse notice timing required when a hiring decision is based on a background check.

Checkr Subscriptions API

Create, list, retrieve, update, and cancel subscriptions that automatically re-run a package for a candidate on a recurring schedule (for example annual re-screening).

Checkr Continuous Checks API

Create, list, retrieve, update, and cancel continuous checks that monitor a candidate on an ongoing basis and surface new criminal or MVR records as they appear, rather than as a one-time point-in-time report.

Checkr Nodes and Hierarchy API

Model your organization as a tree of nodes (locations, departments, franchises) via the hierarchy and nodes endpoints, so reports and billing can be segmented and access controlled across a large account.

Checkr Geos API

Create, list, retrieve, update, and delete geos - the state/locale definitions that scope package pricing and localized compliance requirements so reports follow the rules of the candidate's work location.

Checkr Webhooks API

Register and manage webhook subscriptions that Checkr POSTs event notifications to (report.completed, candidate.created, invitation.completed, and more) over HTTPS or Amazon SNS, giving event-driven updates on long-running screening workflows.

Authentication

Checkr uses HTTP Basic auth: pass your secret API key as the username with an empty password. Publishable keys are used only with Checkr's client-side JS API. Checkr Partner integrations authenticate on behalf of customer accounts using OAuth.

Rate Limits

The API allows 1200 requests per minute across all endpoints, with X-Ratelimit-Limit, X-Ratelimit-Remaining, and X-Ratelimit-Reset response headers. Exceeding it returns HTTP 429. POST requests support an Idempotency-Key header. List endpoints paginate with page and per_page (default 25).
