The number counted a relay that never answered - #17

Conversation
The coverage figure on the Plaza page said 202 of 257 follows reached. It counted a paid relay that refuses the connection itself, so fifty of those people were behind a closed door and the app kept dialling it. Plaza now sets such a relay aside and spends the slot on one that answers. The honest figure is 196, and it is a larger number of people than 202 ever was.

The Plaza page said 196... no: it said 202 of 257 follows covered. That figure counted a relay that had never once completed a connection.
The relay with the most writers on my account is paid, and I have not subscribed. It refuses the websocket handshake, before any Nostr message, so there is no challenge to answer and nothing to authenticate. The coverage counter could not tell the difference between a relay that carries fifty people and one that carries fifty people and will not open the door.
plaza#211 makes Plaza set such a relay aside after three failed connections and spend the slot on the next one down. So:
The printed number went down and the real reach went up, because the freed slot went to a relay that answers. This page now says 196 and explains why it is lower than it looks.
