Originally written in Koine Greek, Cyril of Alexandria’s <title>Commentary on Luke</title> survives in
Syriac translation, with only quoted fragments of Greek. Composed as
156 Homilies on Luke, these are known collectively in Syriac as a commentary.
The Syriac translation is incomplete and the textual history of the work in Greek
and Syriac is complex. Cyril’s homilies also have their own reception across Syriac
florilegia and collections. This collection of homilies,
composed during the burgeoning Nestorian controversy, was discovered in the Nitrian Desert
in Egypt in 1842 and later published in English translation in 1859.
