Given that we'll pause on #717, I'd rather we merge this one in its current state and then come back around to consider how to make fixes for #711.
I don't really wanna make some tweaks on here that are probably half-measures, so let's tackle any fixes we think needed for #711 in #717 (or some other attempt).
