Media & Communication Literature Scan, Aug 2024 – Aug 2026

An interactive browser for 3,639 journal articles published across 20 media, communication, and journalism journals between 1 August 2024 and 10 August 2026.

Open the dashboard

Search titles, abstracts, and authors; filter by journal, theme, and topical relevance; star articles into a reading list and export it as Markdown or BibTeX. Everything runs client-side in a single self-contained HTML file — no server, no tracking, no dependencies.

Journals in scope

Public Opinion Quarterly · Communication Theory · New Media & Society · Journal of Communication · Communication Research · Human Communication Research · Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication · Digital Journalism · Journalism Studies · Journalism · Political Communication · International Journal of Press/Politics · Information, Communication & Society · Media Psychology · Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly · Mass Communication and Society · European Journal of Communication · Communication Methods and Measures · Social Media + Society · Annals of the International Communication Association

How it was built

  1. Harvest. All records of type journal-article with a Crossref publication date in the window, pulled per-journal by ISSN from the Crossref REST API using cursor pagination. Per-journal totals were checked against Crossref's own total-results.
  2. Enrichment. Records were matched by DOI against OpenAlex for topic labels, citation counts, and abstracts where the publisher deposits none to Crossref.
  3. Theme tagging. Titles, abstracts, and OpenAlex topic strings were matched against eleven weighted keyword dictionaries.
  4. Relevance score. A 0–100 composite, weighted toward information seeking and avoidance, news use, motivation, social norms, community and belonging, and measurement. Title matches count triple. Scores are normalised to the 99th percentile and capped at 100.

Harvest date: 10 August 2026. Both APIs are living databases; re-running on a later date will not reproduce these counts exactly.

Limitations — please read before citing anything here

This is a triage and discovery instrument, not a systematic review. It has not been preregistered, the corpus was not screened by human coders, and the relevance score has never been validated. Specifically:

  • The relevance score is an unvalidated keyword dictionary. No precision or recall against human coding, no inter-coder reliability, and the weights were set by judgment. A score of 0 (527 records) means "no dictionary hit," not "irrelevant." 38 articles tie at exactly 100 because of the percentile cap.
  • Theme counts are highly sensitive to dictionary breadth. As one illustration: a narrow social-norms dictionary tags 94 articles (2.6%); a broader and equally defensible one tags 404 (11.1%). Do not treat any theme count as a field-level prevalence estimate.
  • The largest theme is too loose to discriminate. "Platforms, algorithms & AI" catches 61% of the corpus, driven mostly by the strings social media and platform.
  • Abstracts are missing for 1,347 records (37%), and not at random. Taylor & Francis titles deposit no abstracts to Crossref, so Information, Communication & Society (452 missing), Journalism Studies (215), Political Communication (119), and Digital Journalism (106) are systematically under-covered. Any comparison across journals is partly a comparison of publisher deposit practice. Scoring used a fuller set of abstracts than is displayed here, which means the coding input for roughly a third of records is not reproducible from this file.
  • About 5% is not research. 132 book reviews, 38 corrections, and 16 editorials/introductions pass through as journal-article; there is no document-type screening.
  • Citation counts mix two sources (whichever of Crossref or OpenAlex is higher) and are not age-normalised. 85% of 2026 articles have zero citations. Sorting by citations is effectively sorting by age.
  • Dates are Crossref's earliest publication date, usually online-first, so an article may carry a 2026 date and a 2025 issue. 95 records carry only a year and are omitted from the monthly chart.
  • The journal frame is judgment, not criterion. No stated rule produced these 20 titles, and several relevant venues (JOBEM, Communication Monographs, Health Communication, Science Communication) are absent. English-language only.

A publishable version of any claim derived from this corpus would need a preregistered protocol, a justified sampling frame, document-type screening, complete abstracts from a full-record source such as Web of Science or Scopus, human coding with a reported reliability coefficient, and an archived data snapshot.

Data provenance and reuse

Bibliographic metadata comes from Crossref and OpenAlex. Crossref metadata is distributed without copyright restriction; OpenAlex is CC0. Abstracts remain the property of their respective publishers and are included here in the form the publishers themselves deposited for indexing. Every record links to its DOI.

The dashboard code in this repository is free to reuse.
