Dobby Writer is a browser extension that helps you write better with AI assistance. Select any text on any webpage and enhance it instantly with various writing improvements.

Builders: Default API key

• This repo does not include a default API key.
• If you want a default key in your build (not recommended for public repos):
  • In background/background.js, set this.defaultApiKey = 'fw_...'.
  • Users can still override with a custom key in Settings.

🚀 Quick Start

1. Install the Extension

   • Load the extension in your browser (see Installation Guide)
   • Grant necessary permissions

2. Using Dobby

   • Select any text on a webpage
   • Press Tab to open Dobby popup
   • Choose an action or enter custom instructions
   • Copy the improved text or apply directly

3. Chat with Dobby

   • Click the floating Dobby button (bottom-right)
   • Type your message or paste text
   • Use enhancement buttons to improve text in chat

Extension Popup

• Enable Globally: Toggle Dobby on/off across all websites
• Enable for this site: Control Dobby per website
• Quick Actions: Access text enhancement tools instantly

Settings Page

• API Configuration: Use default or custom Fireworks AI key
• Features: Toggle chatbox on/off
• Site Management: Manage disabled sites
• Statistics: Track your usage

Note (open-source build): This repository does not include a default API key. To use the extension, select “Custom API Key” in Settings and enter your Fireworks AI API key.

🎯 Usage Tips

1. Keyboard Shortcut: Tab key is your friend - select text and press Tab
2. Quick Actions: Click extension icon for quick access to actions
3. Chatbox: Use for general questions or text composition
4. Copy Text: You can select and copy Dobby's suggestions freely

🔒 Privacy

• Text is processed through Fireworks AI API
• No data is stored permanently
• All processing happens in real-time
• Your API key (if custom) is stored locally
