APTS-BioGrid 🧠🌿🔋

An AI-Driven One Health Platform for Simultaneous AMR Remediation and Renewable Biogas Optimization in Bangladesh

An AI-integrated wastewater treatment system designed as a System-of-Systems (SoS). It eliminates antibiotic-resistant pathogens and genes (ARB/ARGs) from agricultural and industrial effluent while simultaneously maximizing biogas yield—resolving Bangladesh's twin crises of renewable energy deficit and the "silent pandemic" of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) through a single, governance-ready platform.

Note: APTS-BioGrid is a strategic architectural extension of the AMR Precision Targeting System (APTS) research prototype (Conceptualized December 2025).

APTS-BioGrid integrates seamlessly into existing anaerobic digestion infrastructure as an intelligent, non-disruptive risk governance layer, operating across three core stages:

Installed at the plant's influent stage, F1 replaces delayed culture-based assays with automated computational biology pipelines:

  • Plasmid Dynamics Module (PDM): Evaluates Plasmid Copy Number (PCN) variations using quantitative sequence coverage depth to identify bacterial host metabolic vulnerabilities.
  • Cryptic Gene Sensor (CGS): Deploys machine learning models to detect phenotypically "silent" resistance determinants prone to reactivation under reactor environmental stressors.
  • Metabolic Reprogrammer (MRM): Maps down-regulated microbial nutrient pathways to predict exact structural interventions.

Operates directly inline with anaerobic digestion workflows to execute precision strikes against superbugs while accelerating methanogenesis:

  • Targeted Neutralization: Deploys engineered non-lytic phagemids to cleave high-risk resistance plasmids (e.g., mcr-1, blaNDM-1).
  • Methane Yield Optimization: Employs Antibiotic Resistance-Diminishing Organisms (ARDOs) alongside native acetoclastic Methanosaeta consortia. Clearing toxic pathogen loads minimizes metabolic interference, allowing methanogenic archaea to thrive uninhibited, yielding a projected 15–25% increase in pure $CH_4$ output.

📊 The Remediation Monitor (The Governance Dashboard)

Acts as an open-access, tamper-evident regulatory dashboard to monitor eco-governance:

  • Transforms biological clearing data into definitive Log-Reduction Values (LRV).
  • Cross-references total clean energy output with verified, decontaminated, ARG-free organic fertilizer volumes, enabling data compliance under Bangladesh's Environment Conservation Act 1995.

🌐 One Health Systemic Scope

APTS-BioGrid natively operationalizes the holistic One Health nexus:

  • Animal & Human Health: Intercepts livestock factory-farm antibiotic residues, halting the cycling of multi-drug resistant superbugs back into the human food chain via crop fertilizers.
  • Environmental Health: Deploys advanced chitosan-alginate hydrogels and engineered biochar traps at the output line to capture residual free-floating ARGs, protecting soil microbiomes and groundwater tables.
  • Sustainable Energy Matrix: Converts critical public health hazards into high-yield, standardized national energy assets.

📅 Development Roadmap & Milestones

  • Months 1–2: Algorithmic Prototype Construction
    • Map PDM and MRM data schemas in a Python pipeline.
    • Train lightweight ML models against public genomic databases (CARD, ResFinder).
  • Months 3–4: Baseline Bio-Surveillance Alignment
    • Collate 10–20 baseline metagenomic profiles from local poultry/hospital effluent via university lab partnerships.
  • Months 5–6: Dashboard & API Core Architecture
    • Construct full-stack mockup interfaces (FastAPI backend with streamlit/figma UI) calculating real-time LRV.
  • Months 7–8: Institutional Engagement & Funding
    • Submit formal policy briefs to the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA) and apply for seed validation tracks.
  • Months 9–12: Pilot Site Deployment
    • Install an active hardware/software node at a pilot biogas facility to empirically validate the targeted >80% ARG reduction and 15–25% methane enhancement.
