A workplace infrastructure project that transformed an unused office closet into a dedicated server room with environmental controls, static-safe flooring, rack-mounted infrastructure, structured power distribution, and organized cabling.
The project began as a concept in November 2024 and reached its initial production milestone in February 2025, when the first server was brought online.

The organization needed a dedicated location for production server infrastructure.
The available space was originally a small office closet with standard carpet, no equipment rack, and no physical environment designed for continuous IT operation.
I took the project from initial concept through room planning, facilities preparation, environmental-control integration, static-control flooring, rack deployment, power and cable organization, server installation, validation, and initial production use.
The buildout took approximately three months from concept to the first production server coming online.
This repository focuses specifically on the server room buildout completed between November 2024 and February 2025.
The scope includes:
- Converting the office closet into dedicated IT infrastructure space
- Installing dedicated environmental cooling
- Removing the original carpet
- Preparing the floor for static-control flooring
- Installing static-safe flooring
- Positioning and preparing the full-height equipment rack
- Incorporating grounding and electrical provisions
- Establishing structured rack power
- Preparing and installing the first production server
- Organizing network and power cabling
- Validating the environment for production use
The server room has continued to support additional infrastructure since the original buildout. Later server, storage, UPS, networking, and other infrastructure projects are intentionally outside the scope of this repository and will be documented separately.
The original room was general office space rather than an IT equipment environment.
Key requirements included:
- Converting an unused closet into dedicated infrastructure space
- Replacing standard carpet with a more appropriate static-control surface
- Providing dedicated cooling
- Planning a full-height rack within a constrained room
- Establishing structured power distribution
- Creating serviceable network and power cable paths
- Providing front and rear equipment access
- Preparing the room for production server hardware
- Preserving capacity for future infrastructure growth
The goal was not simply to place a server in a closet. The room needed to become a maintainable production infrastructure environment.
I was responsible for taking the server-room buildout from initial concept through production deployment.
My work included:
- Evaluating the available space
- Defining infrastructure requirements
- Planning the physical room layout
- Coordinating room preparation
- Planning rack placement and rack-unit utilization
- Integrating dedicated environmental controls
- Incorporating static-control flooring and grounding provisions
- Deploying and organizing the equipment rack
- Establishing rack-mounted power distribution
- Routing and managing network and power cabling
- Preparing and installing the first production server
- Validating hardware and network connectivity
- Transitioning the environment into production use
This project combined infrastructure planning, systems administration, networking, hardware deployment, facilities coordination, and project execution.

November 2024
The project began with an unused office closet.
The initial design had to account for rack dimensions, equipment depth, front and rear service access, power, cooling, cable routing, static protection, and future expansion.
The original carpet was removed and dedicated environmental cooling was added as part of the room conversion.
A dedicated ductless cooling system allows the room temperature to be managed independently from the surrounding office environment.
After carpet removal, the underlying floor was cleaned and prepared for the static-control flooring system.
This step prepared the room for a flooring surface better suited to sensitive electronic equipment.
Static-safe flooring was installed and the full-height open-frame rack was positioned in the room.
Rack placement was selected to preserve front and rear service access while making efficient use of the limited room dimensions.
Grounding and electrical provisions were incorporated as part of the room's static-control and infrastructure preparation.
The objective was to create a physical environment better suited to sensitive IT equipment than the original carpeted office space.
The first production server was prepared for deployment.
Preparation included hardware inspection, component installation, mounting preparation, and readiness checks before the system was placed into service.
The first production server was installed into the rack.
The deployment included physical mounting, power integration, network connectivity, and initial system configuration.
The rack was organized around the first production deployment with supporting power and cable-management infrastructure.
This stage established the physical layout and service access that would support ongoing production use and future expansion.
February 2025
The first server was powered on, connected, and validated for production use.
Validation included confirming hardware operation, power stability, network connectivity, and readiness for regular production use.
This marked the completion of the original server-room buildout.

Production server hardware moved into a purpose-built room rather than general office space.
Dedicated cooling provides independent temperature management for continuously operating equipment.
Replacing carpet with static-safe flooring created a more appropriate environment for sensitive electronics.
The rack-based layout provides structured front and rear access for troubleshooting, maintenance, and hardware replacement.
Defined rack power and cable paths improve physical organization and reduce disruption during maintenance.
The room and rack were deliberately designed with capacity for future servers and supporting infrastructure.

This project required designing more than a rack. It required creating the physical environment that production infrastructure depends on.
Cooling, power, static protection, equipment placement, service access, cable routing, and expansion capacity all affect the reliability and maintainability of server infrastructure.
Taking the project from an empty office closet in November 2024 to an operational server room with its first production server online in February 2025 provided hands-on experience across the full infrastructure lifecycle:

The room was intentionally designed with future growth in mind, allowing later infrastructure additions without changing the original physical foundation.
