java 17 is currently available and 18/19 are in preview.
Remove 1.7/1.8 due to name conflicts. Java 1.7/7 is
still supported by Oracle (through July 2022). 1.8/8
is unsupported since 2019.

I'm trying to determine if I should accept PRs here, or if PRs should be made upstream as I sync changes from upstream.

Well since all the changes in this fork have been implemented upstream, this PR should definitely also be make upstream now

Java 1.8 is supported by Oracle until 2030 I think, because way too many people use it. I do not think it should be removed. Perhaps it chould be changes to be called Java8 rather than Java18 or something.
