BetterFly is a virtual pet for your Windows computer. It sits on your desktop and reacts to your actions. You can customize how it looks and watch it share thoughts about your computer use. It stays out of your way while providing company as you work or browse.
Your computer needs to meet these basic standards to run the app:
- Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- 4GB of RAM.
- An active internet connection for the first setup.
- A mouse and keyboard to interact with the pet.
Follow these steps to get BetterFly on your machine.
- Go to the official release page.
- Find the section labeled "Assets."
- Click the file that ends with
.exeto start the download. - Open the file once the download finishes.
- Follow the prompts on the screen to complete the installation.
- Launch the program from your desktop icon.
BetterFly lives in the corner of your screen by default. You can move it by clicking and dragging it to a new spot. If you right-click the pet, a menu appears. This menu lets you access settings, change the look, or close the app.
Your pet changes its mood based on how long you have been at the computer. It might act sleepy if you have not touched your mouse for a while. It shows excitement when you open many programs at once. These moods reflect its personality.
You can change how BetterFly looks through the Settings menu. Open the menu with a right-click and choose "Appearance." You will see a list of available skins and themes. Select one to change the colors and style of your pet. We update these options often, so check back for new looks.
BetterFly runs locally on your computer. It does not send your personal files or browsing history to a remote server. The software uses Rust to ensure that the process stays fast and secure. We designed the app to consume very little power so it does not slow down your other work.
Does the pet disappear when I open a full-screen game? Yes. The pet hides automatically when you enter full-screen mode to prevent it from covering your game window. It returns when you exit the game.
Can I have more than one pet? Current versions support one pet at a time. We may add support for multiple companions in future updates.
How do I turn off the commentary? Open the Settings menu, navigate to the "Behavior" tab, and toggle the "Show Commentary" switch to off. The pet will remain on your screen but will stop showing text bubbles.
What happens if the app freezes? If the pet stops responding, right-click its icon in the system tray near your clock. Select "Restart BetterFly." This resets the app without removing your settings.
Is my internet connection required after installation? You only need the internet for the initial download and for checking update notifications. The pet functions offline once you install it.
How do I remove the app from my computer? Go to your Windows Settings, choose "Apps," find "BetterFly" in the list, and select "Uninstall." This deletes the files and removes the shortcut from your desktop.
