Research Initiative on Evidence-Based Cognitive Architecture for Long-Term Psychological Understanding
ALMA Research is an independent research initiative investigating how artificial intelligence can build cumulative psychological understanding through evidence-based reasoning rather than engagement optimization.
The project explores a new class of cognitive architectures designed to model human psychological patterns across multiple conversations while maintaining explicit uncertainty, competing hypotheses, and longitudinal learning.
Most conversational AI systems optimize immediate response quality.
ALMA explores a different research direction.
Instead of generating isolated responses, the system incrementally constructs an evolving Cognitive State that represents accumulated psychological understanding across time.
The objective is not prediction or persuasion, but evidence-based cognitive modeling that supports long-term relational understanding.
The project investigates several fundamental questions:
- Can conversational AI accumulate reliable psychological understanding across time?
- How should uncertainty be represented within a cognitive architecture?
- Can competing psychological hypotheses coexist until sufficient evidence is collected?
- What computational architecture best supports longitudinal reasoning?
- How can AI improve self-understanding without replacing human judgment?
The ALMA Cognitive Processing Pipeline illustrates how individual conversations are transformed into an evolving Cognitive State through evidence-based reasoning, iterative reflection, and continuous refinement.
- Cognitive Architecture
- Longitudinal Psychological Modeling
- Knowledge Representation
- Evidence-Based Reasoning
- Reflection Mechanisms
- Human-AI Interaction
- Explainable Cognitive Systems
- Ethical AI
Current publications are available through the project website and Notion documentation.
Future work will include:
- Research White Paper
- DARPA Executive Brief
- Scientific publications
- Prototype documentation
The current prototype is conceptual.
Development is focused on validating the cognitive architecture before software implementation.
The cognitive architecture documentation is maintained separately:
