LLM Auto Optimizer

License Rust Crates.io npm Status PRs Welcome

Automatically optimize your LLM infrastructure with intelligent, real-time feedback loops

Features β€’ Quick Start β€’ Architecture β€’ Documentation β€’ Contributing

Overview

The LLM Auto Optimizer is a continuous feedback-loop agent that automatically adjusts model selection, prompt templates, and configuration parameters based on real-time performance, drift, latency, and cost data. Built entirely in Rust.

Status: alpha. Until this release, the workspace had no committed Cargo.lock and its dependency graph had never been resolved, so nothing in this README had been verified by a build. The lockfile now exists and CI runs cargo build --workspace --locked. The subsystem table below is graded against that build, not against intent. See ADR-0001.

What LLM Auto Optimizer aims to do

These are design goals, not measured results. Nothing below has been benchmarked against a running build β€” see the graded table for what currently compiles.

  • πŸ’° Reduce LLM costs through intelligent model selection and prompt optimization
  • ⚑ Short optimization cycles for rapid adaptation to changing conditions
  • 🎯 Multi-objective optimization balancing quality, cost, and latency
  • πŸš€ Progressive canary deployments with automatic rollback on degradation
  • πŸ”’ Audit logging for compliance use cases
  • 🌐 REST & gRPC endpoints
  • πŸ–₯️ CLI for operations

Features

Core Capabilities

Graded against cargo build --workspace --locked and cargo test --locked -p <crate> on rustc 1.97.1, 2026-07-27. No row is βœ… Complete: βœ… Complete requires the subsystem's tests to pass in CI, and the workspace does not currently build. The "Description" column states what the code is intended to do and is not a verified claim.

Feature Crate Description Status
Feedback Collection collector OpenTelemetry + Kafka integration with circuit breaker, DLQ, rate limiting 🚧 Library compiles; test targets do not
Stream Processing processor Windowing (tumbling, sliding, session), aggregation, watermarking ❌ Does not compile (28 errors)
Distributed State processor::state Redis/PostgreSQL backends with distributed locking, 3-tier caching ❌ Does not compile (in processor)
Analyzer Engine analyzer 5 analyzers: Performance, Cost, Quality, Pattern, Anomaly detection 🚧 Compiles; 1 test passes
Decision Engine decision 5 strategies: Model Selection, Caching, Rate Limiting, Batching, Prompt Optimization 🚧 Library compiles; test targets do not
Canary Deployments actuator Progressive rollouts with automatic rollback and health monitoring 🚧 Compiles; 1 test passes
Storage Layer storage Multi-backend storage (PostgreSQL, Redis, Sled) with unified interface 🚧 Compiles; 1 test passes
REST API api-rest HTTP endpoints with OpenAPI docs, auth, rate limiting ❌ Blocked β€” depends on processor
gRPC API api-grpc RPC services with streaming support ❌ Blocked β€” depends on processor
Integrations integrations GitHub, Slack, Jira, Anthropic Claude, Webhooks 🚧 Library compiles; test targets do not
CLI Tool cli Command-line interface ❌ Does not compile (6 errors)
Main Service Binary llm-optimizer Service orchestration with health monitoring ❌ Blocked β€” depends on processor
Deployment β€” Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, systemd manifests πŸ“‹ Manifests present, none validated by CI

Legend: βœ… Complete β€” builds and its tests pass in CI Β· 🚧 In progress β€” compiles, but not covered by passing tests Β· ❌ Does not compile Β· πŸ“‹ Present but unverified.

Measured totals: 20 tests pass, across types (14), config (2), and analyzer / actuator / storage / api (1 each). The repo contains ~2,161 #[test]/#[tokio::test] attributes; the rest are in targets that do not compile, so they have never run. Test suites in collector, decision, integrations, and benchmarks reference types and module paths that do not exist in their crates.

Known blockers

  • processor fails on 14 never-type-fallback errors in its Redis code (state/redis_backend.rs, state/redis_backend_enterprise.rs, storage/redis.rs, deduplication/mod.rs). This is the single blocker for api-rest, api-grpc, and llm-optimizer.
  • cli imports rand without declaring it, and uses the Formatter enum as &dyn Formatter in commands/run.rs.

Optimization Strategies

1. A/B Prompt Testing

Test multiple prompt variations with statistical significance testing (p < 0.05) to identify the most effective prompts.

// Example: Test two prompt variations
let experiment = ExperimentBuilder::new()
    .name("greeting_test")
.variant("control", "Hello, how can I help?")
.variant("treatment", "Hi there! What can I assist you with today?")
    .metric("user_satisfaction")
    .significance_level(0.05)
    .build();
2. Reinforcement Feedback

Learn from user feedback using contextual bandits and Thompson Sampling to continuously improve model selection.

3. Cost-Performance Scoring

Multi-objective Pareto optimization balancing quality, cost, and latency to find the optimal configuration.

4. Adaptive Parameter Tuning

Dynamically adjust temperature, top-p, max tokens based on task characteristics and historical performance.

5. Threshold-Based Heuristics

Detect performance degradation, drift, and anomalies with automatic response and alerting.

Component Overview

The "Tests" column below previously carried hand-typed counts that no test run produced. It now reports tests that actually pass, measured with cargo test --locked -p <crate> on rustc 1.97.1, 2026-07-27.
