AVefi – Automated network system for audiovisual holdings via standardised film identifiers
AVefi is a cross-institutional, web-based system for the identification, linking, and discovery of audiovisual holdings across archives and collections.
The platform brings together heterogeneous film metadata and distinguishes between Works, Manifestations, and Items, following established film cataloguing standards such as the FIAF Moving Image Cataloguing Manual. Each entity can be referenced through a persistent efi (standardised film identifier) based on the Handle System.
AVefi enables institutions to connect their holdings while retaining links to the original data sources. The resulting network supports reliable identification, comparison, citation, and research across distributed audiovisual collections.
The project is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and developed in cooperation between:
- TIB – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology
- Deutsche Kinemathek
- Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung mbH Göttingen (GWDG)
- Filmmuseum Düsseldorf
- Marburg Center for Digital Culture & Infrastructure
The current AVefi plus project continues the development of AVefi towards a sustainable research infrastructure, expands the integration of further data sources and partners, and extends the system to film-related materials.
