Ensure that your class declaration specifies the item type to get. For example:

public class WordAdapter extends ArrayAdapter {
...
}

for example if you changed your line to get an object of type Word your line would look like:
Word currentWord = getItem(position);

and your class definition would look like this:
public class WordAdapter extends ArrayAdapter {
...
}
