Why: Highest willingness-to-pay photo use case. Unlike PhotoPrism (which we ship), Immich has first-party iOS/Android apps with automatic background camera-roll backup — the feature that makes people actually leave Google Photos/iCloud paid storage. Complements PhotoPrism rather than replacing it (PhotoPrism = browse/organize, Immich = mobile backup).
Caveats: Heavier microservice stack (server + ML/transcode container + Postgres-with-pgvector + Redis) — watch the footprint on ARM. Fast-moving project with frequent breaking releases — higher maintenance.
