Performance issue with syntax highlighting for closed or hidden code panels

Summary

My team noticed that a complex Table filtering story of ours was producing 70k nodes of syntax highlighting even though the code panel was collapsed. This was causing measurable lag when interacting with the story. Does the code panel have to render the nodes even when collapsed?
