+ + + + + Rabbula, bishop of Edessa— ܪܒܘܠܐ ܐܦܝܣܩܘܦܐ ܕܐܘܪܗܝ + + Arthur Vööbus + Julian Joseph Overbeck + Cornelia Horn + Robert R. Phenix + + http://syriaca.org/work/5501 + + + Abstract + + A set of canons or admonitions directed at monks and ascribed to Rabbula in the manuscripts. + The canons aim at a rigid, rigorous and restrictive idea of monastic life to be led in the countryside. Admonitions 1,2 and 15 explicitly forbid entering the cities, except under well defined circumstances. Distrust of individual asceticism transpires especially from admonitions 5 and 6. + + Overbeck published an edition of the longer recension in 1865, which was translated into English by R.H.Connoll in 1905. Arthur Vööbus’s 1960 critical edition (Syriac and Arabic Documents, 27–33), was based on nine manuscripts, including the three at the disposal of Overbeck (S. Ephraemi Syri, 210–11) which both designate with the the sigla: MS A = BL 14577; MS B = BL Add 14652; MS C = BL 14526 (shorter recension). The edition in Phenix and Horn 2017 reprints Vööbus edition with minor changes and a few notes. + + + + + Disambiguation + +Not to be confused with the Canons for the Monk attested only in MS Vat. Borg. Syr. 10 (fols. 106a-109a). Vööbus dated this collection to the sixth century, in view of the well-developed characterisation of monasticism in them. Thus the attribution to Rabbula attested in the manuscript is nowadays considered spurious, and the collection ascribed to “Pseudo-Rabbula”. + + + + Ancient versions + +Known from a shorter or a longer recension, respectively identified as CPG 6491 and CPG 6492. The shorter recension (CPG 6491), contains canons 1, 7, 8, 15, 16, 19, and 25 from the longer recension and canons 17 and 48 from the Commandments and Admonitions for the Priests and the Children of the Covenant (CPG 6490) [Overbeck’s edition is apparently available in https://syriaccorpus.org/493, linked to NHSL Work ID(s): +http://syriaca.org/work/8980 and +http://syriaca.org/work/8876 both of which STILL TO DO ]. + + + + + + +Manuscripts + +This is not a comprehensive list of manuscripts related to this work. + + + +f. 83b + + + + +Edition + +This is not a comprehensive list of editions related to this work. + + +SESHS 2 +Vööbus, Arthur + +27-33 + + + +Modern Translations + +This is not a comprehensive list of modern translations related to this work.
