ControlR Logo

Hello, friends!

I'm Jared, and I'm building ControlR.

It's a self-hosted, open-source remote access solution that's fair, honest, and transparent.

A Humble Request:

Unlike other self-hosted remote access software, ControlR does not place arbitrary restrictions on features in order to push you into a higher subscription tier. For example, even the free tier gets commercially-signed binaries, access to agents on all platforms, and unlimited managed devices. Future features like SSO will also be included.

Only features that have a significant, per-user cost will have a minimum sponsorship tier. Currently, only automated branded/customized builds are in that category, since the compute and storage for each build will have a direct expense. Plus, this is just a convenience. The build scripts are public so you could do it yourself if you wanted.

However, the largest expense will always be paying myself. My current corporate sponsorship allows me to do this, but it does have an expiration. In order to continue developing ControlR beyond that, I will need sponsorships from users. If you believe in my vision for ControlR, and you are able to, I humbly ask for your sponsorship in any amount that you think is appropriate. Every dollar helps.

Thank you!

- Jared

My Vision

ControlR aims to be remote access done right. No paywalls that hide features. No sudden pricing changes. No rug pulls. No gaslighting the community when mistakes are made.

I want to build something that's open, honest, and truly values its users. I want to be a real partner who works with you to solve problems, not just another vendor.

I've been in the RMM and remote access space for a while, being the original author of Remotely and having worked at companies like Syncro and ImmyBot. I'm confident in my technical ability to make a product that the community will love, and I believe that my genuine desire for ongoing transparency will be a breath of fresh air.

The Roadmap

Right now, ControlR offers:

  • Full remote desktop control (Windows, macOS, Linux with X11 and Wayland)
  • Cross-platform PowerShell terminal
  • Real-time file management
  • Instant chat with remote users
  • Remote log streaming
  • Everything operates over standard HTTPS/WSS port 443
  • Permissive MIT license, allowing integration into commercial products

With support from the community, I'm hoping to bring so much more to the platform:

  • Branding and customization (coming soon)
  • Automation and scripting capabilities
  • Scheduled script runs and maintenance
  • Advanced device management and monitoring features
  • Application deployment and patching
  • Deeper integrations with other solutions
  • Whatever the community needs most

Your Support

ControlR is now my full-time work and my only source of income. I'm betting on the idea that if I build something genuinely useful and keep it open and honest, the community will support its development.

Your sponsorship doesn't buy you features that others don't get. Everything stays MIT-licensed, everything stays free for everyone. What you do get is:

  • A voice in prioritizing features and bug fixes
  • The satisfaction of supporting a project built on transparency
  • Knowing you're helping keep remote access tools accessible to everyone

This is a long-term commitment. I'm not here to build something, monetize it, and sell out. I'm not interested in investments or acquisitions from private equity, which can lead to a slow decay of the product as short-term gains take priority over long-term customer happiness.

I'm here to build a tool that serves the community and grows with it.

No Strings Attached

As the website says, "remote access, without the strings." I truly mean that. Every feature is available to everyone, forever. Subscribers help shape the roadmap and get the convenience of automated custom builds, but they don't get exclusive features. That's the promise.

If you believe in this vision, I'd be honored to have your support.

Thank you for your consideration and interest.

- Jared
