Improve error messages and ensure they're used appropriately

At least one (sentinel) error seems to be used erroneously, as described in micromdm/scep#224.

Also check other errors, and if they make sense where they are used.

#36 is a little bit more specific. Keeping both for now, but this maybe can be closed if the other gets done.
