Menubar icon shows muted status if ANY output device is muted, not just the active device #124

Describe your issue

I'm currently seeing the muted status (dimmed icon, red slash through it) even though my device (my headphones) isn't muted. I have, however, muted a different output (my speakers) just to make sure that if I switch, I'm not blasted unintentionally. This seems to be a problem specifically with my headphones and my speakers. If I mute any other device, this isn't a problem.

(I'm wondering if this is related to the other bug I posted previously about being unable to reconfigure the outputs with custom names and icons. In the screenshots, you can see that my PRO headphones have a speaker icon, and the built-in audio jack has a headphones icon. I've tried to customize that to be opposite, but the settings never seem to stick.)

Steps to reproduce

  1. Have more than one non-built-in output. It is not clear what the conditions are. In my case, I have a set of USB headphones, and a set of speakers plugged into the audio jack of the mac.
  2. Make sure your current device is not muted, and sound is coming through it.
  3. Mute the other device. Notice that the icon changes to the muted status, even though you're still getting sound through the original device.

What was the expected result?

The icon only shows the muted status if the currently selected output device is muted, not any other.
