[Feature]: Bottom navigation bar needs an overhaul

What problem would this solve?

Picasa has a really nice gui that can be used as inspiration.
Bandiview also has a great bottom navigation bar (the icons especially are very neat).
The main problem currently is readability and usability.
But if the design could be improved, that would also be welcome.

I set image fit size to 90% which creates space around the navigation bar. This works great for browsing, but doesn't help when zooming in an example like above.

Picasa's solution was to have a solid background bar. I suspect the full screen folks won't like that, so perhaps an option to configure transparency?
