Can contributors work on unselected GSoC 2026 projects?

Hi @rsamoilov! I noticed some GSoC proposals didn't get selected this year (like the Blueprinter integration for Rage::OpenAPI, etc). Are contributors free to work on those independently, or are they reserved for future GSoC cycles?

Just to be clear I'm not interested in GSoC itself, I just want to contribute and learn.

That's great news! Your changes around Rage::Deferred were implemented very well.

This year's GSoC projects are absolutely not reserved for future GSoC cycles - you're free to work on any of them. And let me know if I can support you in any way or answer any questions.

That's great to hear. I will try to open a design proposal for suggestions before I open any PRs. Will start working on the Blueprinter integration for Rage::OpenAPI.

It’s great that you’re interested in the Blueprinter integration! As @rsamoilov mentioned, I actually submitted a formal proposal for this specific project for GSoC 2026.
Since I’ve already implemented the Alba integration for Rage, I have a clear vision of how the architecture should look. My plan is to use Prism for static analysis to extract fields and views without executing the code, mirroring the current Alba implementation. I already have a working Proof of Concept (PoC) ready.
I’d love for us to work on this together! To avoid duplicating effort, I’m dropping my proposed design and PoC here so we can use them as a base:

Let's look over these and we can discuss how to split the tasks (like core logic, test cases, and YARD integration). Looking forward to collaborating!

I've created #295. The first issue there is blocking, but all others can be worked on pretty much in parallel. Let me know if it works!

@rsamoilov With Blueprinter almost done, I'm working on the docs right now. I was thinking of looking into Observability: Metrics & Context Propagation next do you have any other suggestions?

Yes, if you'd like to look into Observability: Metrics & Context Propagation, that would be amazing. I'd only suggest leaving the context propagation bit either completely out or postponed until the very end.

I'm going to be honest - there's no glory here 😄 The project isn't famous, we have no sponsorships, and if that changes someday, I'd probably put it towards community growth. Joining just means write access and being listed as a core maintainer - no obligations.
