The Phantom Train boss fight seems to need some tuning. The only valid strategy I could devise other than using a Fenix Down was to have Sabin use Aura Bolt and both Shadow and Cyan use healing items. The train died before the break could occur and I didn't have access to anything other than Sabin to break 1 shield per round.

Hmm apparently the bots cheat to get through it but I don't remember having an issue when I played on v0.7. Lemme know if it comes up again if you replay with a later release?

We dug into this against the game data, and you're exactly right — and it isn't fixed. The fight is unchanged from v0.6 through the current build, and v0.8's MP repricing actually made your strategy a little more expensive to run. Reopening.

What's going on: the Phantom Train has 6 shields keyed to bludgeoning, but the party you fight it with can only remove one per round, and only through Sabin — Aura Bolt chips one via the holy weakness, Pummel chips one as bludgeoning. Cyan's SwdTechs are all slashing, so he can't chip at all. Shadow was designed to chip with Fire Skeans and Bolt Edges, but nothing in the scenario sells them — the ghost merchant's stock doesn't include them, so unless you shopped in South Figaro before the scenario split with foreknowledge, Shadow has no key either.

The arithmetic backs your report: the train has 1900 HP. If anyone besides Sabin deals damage, it dies in roughly 3–5 rounds — strictly before 6 chips can land, so "the train died before the break could occur" is exactly what the numbers predict. The only line where the break completes is the one you found: Sabin chipping every round while the other two deal zero damage and play medic, with about two rounds of margin. Your follow-up is right too — Shadow's shop Shurikens and item throughput are a big part of why the medic line survives at all.

Why it slipped through: the design budgeted 2–3 chips per round for this fight (a double-hitting Pummel that was never actually built, plus Shadow's skeans), but the shipped game delivers exactly 1. And our automated playthrough rigs this battle instead of fighting it honestly, so no test ever tried to complete the break under real conditions. We're overhauling the test system to play everything for real — a direct consequence of this report.

Fix directions on the table: make multi-hit real (Pummel chipping twice restores the intended pace), stock the ghost merchant with the skeans so Shadow's key exists in-scenario, and/or lower the shield count. One or more of these will land in an upcoming release; this stays open until it does.

Thanks for the sharp report — the "only Sabin, 1 per round" observation was precisely the bug.

Data point from the honesty program (#75): the automated playthrough now beats the Phantom Train for real — no kill-bit, no HP clamps, no Fenix-on-undead cheese, controller input only. The winning line is exactly the one you found, plus one ingredient the harness was missing: triage. Sabin chips (Aura Bolt / Pummel / Suplex, five chips 6→1), and the fight was won not by more damage but by a medic doctrine — Cyan heals full-time below 75%, Sabin self-preserves below 65%, Shadow backs up below 45% and throws otherwise. Two in-fight Fenix revives of Cyan, win on attempt 2-3 of a 3-attempt ladder, reproduced byte-for-byte.

Margin characterization for the balance era: the break never completes (the train dies at 1 shield standing — same shape as every winning line we've measured), confirming your "died before the break could occur" observation is structural, not luck. And the honest economy makes the scenario tighter than the old rigged runs ever showed: fleeing earns nothing, so the party reaches the ghost merchant ~9,000 gil poorer than the old contaminated lineage, and that shop is the scenario's last — its stock list is now effectively a hard budget (~5,700 spent of ~7,500 carried).

The fix directions in the earlier comment (multi-hit Pummel per #54, skeans in the ghost merchant stock, or fewer shields) remain open as your call for a future release; the playability bar itself is met.

Owner update: #74 is reproduced honestly — the automated playthrough now beats the Phantom Train with controller input only, confirming both the report and the underlying design gap (one chip per round, all through Sabin; the break never completes). We're still considering how to fix it, tentatively BOTH directions: multi-hit Pummel (restoring the intended 2-3 chips per round, per the #54 build list) and stocking some skeans for Shadow so his intended key exists in-scenario. Lands in a future balance-themed release; this stays open until it does.
