Work plan: stress: add clients to device stress test (#3836)

Summary

Today the device stress test drives only synthetic onchain users — the
orchestrator calls the serviceability program's CreateUser instruction with
synthesised IPs (--client-ip-base 9.200.0.0 + idx). No actual Linux container
exists behind those IPs, so the device under test sees the config push but
never sees real GRE encap/decap from a real client. Parent issue #3744
intentionally scoped client-side stress out; this issue (#3836) starts adding
it back. The first step is to bring up a small, fixed pool of real
doublezerod client containers alongside the existing synthetic sweep so the
DUT exercises real tunnel state in parallel with the synthetic load.

Approach

Option A — static client pool alongside the synthetic sweep. The local
harness script (run-stress-local.sh) grows a --num-clients N knob
(default 0 = current behavior). When N > 0, the script reuses the existing
e2e client image and dev/dzctl add-client to spin up N containers before
launching the orchestrator. Each container:

1. Gets a fresh generated keypair and a non-conflicting CYOA host-ID.
2. Boots doublezerod against the devnet ledger (entrypoint in
   e2e/docker/client/entrypoint.sh already does this).
3. Has its access-pass set onchain (manager container, same
   doublezero access-pass set call the synthetic-sweep loop already uses).
4. Runs doublezero connect ibrl --device <DEVICE_CODE> from inside the
   container — this creates a real user onchain and opens a real GRE tunnel
   to the stress device.

Clients stay up for the entire sweep and are torn down by the harness when
the operator stops the run (or the script's existing teardown path runs).

Why Option A, not "make the orchestrator drive client lifecycle":

• The orchestrator's job today is the onchain sweep + agent log capture. The
  containerized-client integration is additive; doing it without
  re-architecting the orchestrator keeps the change reviewable and
  rollback-safe.
• Existing e2e tooling (devnet.AddClient, dev/dzctl add-client,
  doublezero connect ibrl) already implements the full client lifecycle —
  reusing it via shell-out is dramatically cheaper than reimplementing client
  container management inside the orchestrator binary.
• The parent issue's milestone is mostly closed; this is best as the
  minimum viable next step so we can validate at small N (e.g. 4 clients)
  before any later refactor pulls client lifecycle into the orchestrator.

Why not bind into the physical harness yet: the physical harness's DUT is
remote; running client containers on the operator host that build GRE tunnels
to a physical Arista over the office network requires routing/firewall setup
that isn't in scope here. A follow-up issue can cover that.

Why not replace synthetic users entirely: the sweep's whole point is
scaling to ~1000 users; running 1000 containers locally is infeasible. The
synthetic path stays. Real clients are additional coverage.

Files to Change

• tools/stress/scripts/run-stress-local.sh — primary change. Add CLI flags
  --num-clients N (default 0) and --client-host-id-base B (default 100,
  must not collide with DZ_STRESS_DEVICE_HOST_ID=50 or the orchestrator's
  IP range). When N > 0:
  • Loop 0..N-1: generate client-<i>.json keypair (use solana-keygen new
    via the manager container, or generate locally via a small Python
    helper that writes a 64-byte ed25519 keypair file — pick whichever is
    simpler to invoke from bash).
  • Loop 0..N-1: dev/dzctl add-client --cyoa-network-host-id $((B+i)) --keypair-path <keypair> to start the container.
  • Loop 0..N-1: derive client CYOA IP + pubkey from each keypair; for each,
    run doublezero access-pass set --client-ip <ip> --user-payer <pk> --accesspass-type prepaid in the manager container.
  • Loop 0..N-1: docker exec <client-container> doublezero connect ibrl --device $DEVICE_CODE with retry (mirror connectClientWithRetry from
    e2e/device_stress_test.go).
  • Wait per-client for tunnel-up via docker exec ... doublezero status
    (or the status UDS) with a short timeout.
  • Write the list of client container names to
    ${RUN_DIR}/clients.txt so the operator can docker rm -f them on
    teardown.
  • In the printed teardown instructions: append docker rm -f $(cat ${RUN_DIR}/clients.txt).
• tools/stress/scripts/README.md — append a short "Containerized clients"
  section describing the --num-clients knob, host-ID-base semantics, the
  manual teardown step, and any caveats (clients are static, not part of the
  sweep target, etc).

• tools/stress/device-orchestrator/cmd/device-orchestrator/main.go —
  possibly one tweak: ensure --target-user-count 0 is a supported
  no-op so an operator can run the harness with only real clients (no
  synthetic users). If the orchestrator already accepts Target == 0
  (it does — see provision() early return), no code change is needed; if
  not, add the early-exit. Validate during implementation; this should be
  a no-op based on current code.

Risks & Considerations

• CYOA host-ID collisions. The device uses host-ID 50; the orchestrator's
  onchain synthetic users use a separate --client-ip-base (default
  9.200.0.0, an unrelated /16) so they don't appear on the CYOA network at
  all. Real clients live on the CYOA network and need real host-IDs there.
  Default --client-host-id-base=100 gives clear separation from 50. Hard
  limit: cap N at (2^hostbits - host-id-base - reserved) and fail-fast at
  flag-parse time with a clear error rather than letting dzctl add-client
  return a cryptic IP-exhaustion error.
• Tunnel-ID collisions with the synthetic sweep. The serviceability
  program assigns tunnel IDs sequentially per device. Real clients created
  via doublezero connect ibrl will be allocated tunnel IDs from the same
  pool. The orchestrator's runlog already ignores agent events for tunnel
  IDs it didn't register (sweep.go: consumeAgentEvents logs and drops
  unknown IDs at debug level), so real-client tunnels won't break the
  runlog — they'll just show up as "unregistered" in agent-event logs.
  Verify this assumption holds during implementation; if it floods logs at
  high tunnel counts, switch the unknown-ID log to trace level or filter
  out the real-client IDs explicitly.
• Onchain user-account count cap. The DUT's max-users is set to 128 in
  run-stress-local.sh (see device update line). Real clients consume from
  the same pool. If a sweep targets --target-users 128, adding 4 real
  clients risks the synthetic sweep failing partway. Mitigate: document the
  budget in the README and recommend --target-users <= 128 - num-clients.
  (Or bump --max-users proportionally; cleaner.)
• Resource use. Each client container runs doublezerod, mounts a
  keypair, joins two docker networks, and adds a GRE tunnel kernel
  interface. At small N (≤16) this is fine on a typical dev machine; we
  shouldn't claim it scales to 100s.
• Compatibility with --no-agent. The --no-agent mode disables the
  SSH-driven agent on the DUT. Real clients still need the device's agent
  to push config and bring tunnels up — so --num-clients > 0 should
  refuse to run with --no-agent. Fail-fast at flag parse time.
• Race vs orchestrator's access-pass loop. The harness already
  pre-creates access passes for the orchestrator's synthetic IPs in
  parallel (xargs -P). The new client access-passes are at different IPs
  and run after that loop completes, so there's no contention.
• Onchain user creation racing the orchestrator. The orchestrator runs
  after clients connect; orchestrator picks up the user list with
  ListUsers before each batch and reconciles to its target. The
  orchestrator's reconcile.PlanFor filters by owner pubkey so real-client
  users (owned by the client keypair, not the manager) don't enter its
  delete plan. Verify this with a smoke run.

Testing Strategy

• Local smoke run with --num-clients 4 --target-users 0 (orchestrator
  sweep disabled, only real clients): verify 4 doublezerod containers
  come up, get tunnel-up, and the device shows 4 active Tunnel500 sessions.
• Local smoke run with --num-clients 4 --target-users 8 --hold-seconds 10:
  verify both populations coexist — DUT carries 4 real GRE tunnels
  throughout while the synthetic sweep cycles through 8 onchain users.
• Verify --num-clients 0 is the default and the harness is byte-for-byte
  identical to today's behavior in that case.
• Verify --num-clients 1 --no-agent exits with a clear error at flag
  parse.
• No new Go unit tests required for this PR — the change is pure shell
  composition over existing tested components. (If the optional
  orchestrator Target == 0 early-exit needs a tweak, add a sweep_test
  case for that.)
