Supporting GNU regex syntax bits?

Hi.

I'm wondering how hard it would be for your library to supply an API like that of the GNU regex? In particular, I need the ability to support different flavors of syntax, depending upon different sets of syntax bits.

This would be to drop into GNU awk, if possible.
