would like to hear a bit more about how it went,
if you are still plannign to work on this, and what the major challenges were.

Hi,
first of all i like what you are doing with the plugget addon, it looks very similar to what i imagined a addon updater should do.
My main motivation was to have a addon updater which would not depend on each addon developer to integrate it into their addon as that requires effort and additional maintenance from each developer.
It turned out to be much simpler to get the basics to work but since i have a bunch of other addons and not so much time to work on everyone of them i mostly intended it to be a proof of concept which could inspire other developers to pick up the idea and make something more sophisticated.

The major challenges i see is the fact that Addons come from different places and in different formats.
Github is very simple to query, so i used that in the concept, however the repository can be structured in a way that might not be compatible with blender and some method would need to be written to fix that.
Another source are pages like the blender market where there is no api to access the addons a user bought, this is very limiting to a updater system.
I was talking at the last blender conference with the guys from blender market and showed them the concept and they were open to the idea of having a api for it but i think they have a ton of other priorities on their hands so i dont see that happening any time soon.
Also every other page which hosts addons would need something similar to support the addon updater.
Maybe the upcoming blender asset store (forgot the name) can solve some of those issues.

I dont have a ton of time on my hands at the moment so i dont think i can find tome to work on this project with you.
