I get the same output in Ubuntu as well. Device is connected from Host DP to Mac miniDP.

This seems to be related to the iMac missing the display controller, eg TDM isn't supported. I can't verify this though.

I'm getting the error on a mid 2011 imac 27". I'm using a linux laptop with USB-C to Mini-DP cable. I can't get OSX to work either
