It seems to me, that the project's default font when setting sansserif=false does not support some German characters. Especially, “ß” is consistently displayed as “SS”.
This might be related to me using cleanthesis with XeLaTeX and polyglossia, but I doubt it. The issue disappears when setting sansserif=true.
