ERROR: IO 'dataout[7]' is unconstrained in PCF

Hello Michael,

many thanks for the romulator 6502. it really is a great tool.

I have a problem with creating my own custom firmware. The "make program" process is always aborted with an error message. I just can't find the problem and hope you could give me a hint.

I am using a Raspberry Pi 3+ with the latest RaspianOS (64Bit).

When I generate the files via your website, the firmware works on the romulator.

Hi Frank, Thanks for letting me know. Interesting, I haven't seen that error before. First, could you check a couple of things: the version of apio currently installed on the pi (apio --version) Also, you may need to pull the latest from the bf-romulator repository, depending on when you cloned it. I made some changes recently to update to apio version 0.8.1 and changed a bit in the verilog. Would you mind sending me your config files, so I can see if I can reproduce the same error? Let's start there and hopefully can get to the root of the issue. Thanks, - Mike

I can report that the Romulator 6502 runs very well in a Commodore 1541 floppy drive. I have four floppyspeeders running with it and the loading time with the additional RAM and parallel cable is accelerated by a factor of 27 (DolphinDos).

I just re-imaged my raspberry pi and went through the setup process for bf-romulator (hadn't used it in awhile)

I am getting the same error:

ERROR: IO 'dataout[7]' is unconstrained in PCF (override this error with --pcf-allow-unconstrained)

With my old pi setup it seemed to work fine with apio 0.5.4, but now it does not seem to work with 0.8.1

I am using the latest master copy from github

Was there some change in apio syntax/strictness (starting with the use of 0.8.1) that is now failing in up5k.pcf?

I have tried various tricks such as adding

flags = --pcf-allow-unconstrained

to apio.ini to no avail, as well as some declarations and assignments for port 7 to try to force it through-- but I have no experience with HDL and none of that seemed to work either

Finally figured out how to get the current branch to compile

You need to roll back to apio 0.5.4

However, you also need to use the older version of Python because apio 0.5.4 will not work with Python versions > 3.9

Things can get hairy with OS-level global python on the latest Raspberry OS releases, so it's best to set up a pyenv for the /bf-romulator directory for python 3.9.18

The gist of it is:

1. Do the normal setup.sh to get into the mostly non-functioning state
2. Install pyenv
3. Use pyenv to install python 3.9.18 (note this may require some system-wide dependencies to successfully compile and install)
4. Activate a pyenv local environment in the bf-romulator directory and specify the local python version as 3.9.18:
   pyenv local 3.9.18
   python -m venv venv
5. Assume control of the environment in that folder: source venv/bin/activate
6. pip install apio==0.5.4
7. apio install scons yosys ice40
8. Then finally 'make program'

Oh and one more tip, the /boot/config.txt is no longer the correct file to add dtparam=spi=on (as attempted by setup.sh)
Instead be sure to add or uncomment that line in /boot/firmware/config.txt
