Dynamic icon size

The icon size should be dynamic.
Getting smaller when zooming out, so the map isn't getting too crowded.

Leaflet doesn't directly support dynamic icon sizes. One way to approach it, is to have multiple JS-Instances of icons with different icon sizes, then creating an event listener for the zoom event, and depending on the current zoom toggle the icons with the correct size.

Looking into some options that avoid having to duplicate the entire icon set multiple times if possible. First thought is to try and apply CSS transformations when the map is zoomed.

CSS isn't going to work; the icons will change size but it also affects the coordinates. Trying to reposition the large number of markers them during each zoom operation to compensate will be too laggy. We could possibly try to have one or more 'cutoff' zoom levels where going beyond that zoom triggers a resize, which would avoid entirely separate icon sets. But doing this is extra overhead that would probably be even slower than just using the alternate icon sets.

KoenigsKind's suggestion is definitely the better one to go with, and we should use the zoomend event to check the zoom level and enable/disable layer sets as necessary.
