Cryptic error message

When I run dhcpcd-gtk in a console I get this error message / maybe make it a bit more explicit , because I have not figured yet how to solve the problem

dhcpcd-gtk version: 0.7.8-1 on an uptodate linux mint

Looks pretty clear to me - dhcpcd-gtk cannot open a connection to dhcpcd because the socket does not exist.
This means a few things:

• dhcpcd is not running
• dhcpcd is running for a specific interface
• dhcpcd is running for a specific family

For dhcpcd-gtk, dhcpcd-qt, etc to work, dhcpcd needs to be running in manager mode without any interface or family specified on the command line. Or, putting it another way, started as a service rather than part of an interface.

I am on Devuan. I run KDE so my interest is in the Qt client. I installed cairo-svg and enough -dev packages to make configure happy.

The error gives a strong clue to what is happening, but it would be nice to not have to use strace or go to the sources to figure out what file was not found. It's clear to you because you know what the function does. My questions were, was a config file not opened? What is the filepath/name which was not found?

Using strace I see it's looking for a socket but I don't have one where it's looking. I have /var/run/dhcpcd/wlan0.sock. (and also some other sockets for another interface I don't care to manage with this tool anyway.) I edited src/dhcpcd.h thusly:

Neato. Now should something happen when I click on the tray icon? I can right-click it and I get options for about and quit, and about does give an about dialog. No further output in the console. Quit also does quit. From strace it doesn't really look like anything is being attempted when I left-click.
