<p>Supported the EPIC (Enhancing Parachutes by Instrumenting the Canopy) project at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center - research aimed at developing flexible strain-sensing technology for supersonic parachutes, with future applications for delivering scientific payloads to Mars. Integrated the VN-200 GNSS/INS sensor with embedded computers and microcontrollers across five live parachute drop tests, capturing synchronized acceleration, GPS, gyroscope, and position data at ±0.5 ms timing accuracy.</p>
<p>Designed three custom PCBs (two flexible) in Altium Designer and KiCad, including custom footprints for physical sensor mounting and deployment onto parachute canopies during live tests. Flex circuits used polyimide substrates with ENIG finish. Built Python DAQ pipelines with Butterworth zero-phase filtering and time synchronization across all five test runs, reducing preparation and analysis time by approximately 40%.</p>
<p>Supported instrumentation setup, functional testing, and validation for two live canopy drop tests in the dry lake bed at Edwards AFB. Worked alongside NASA researchers from the Dale Reed Subscale Flight Research Laboratory developing methods for temperature testing flexible sensors and data analysis for future tests.</p>

<h3>NeuroArm - Wireless EEG-Controlled Robotic Arm</h3>

<p>Led a 3-member team building a 2-DOF wireless robotic arm proof of concept controlled by EEG brain signals. Owned the full embedded firmware and wireless communication layer from concept to live demonstration at the Senior Design Expo.</p>
<p>The original platform was an STM32 for EEG processing and Arduino for servo communication. When a teammate could not generate compatible firmware for the STM32 within our timeline, and the university firewall blocked Arduino's IoT cloud entirely, I proposed pivoting the full communication layer to an ESP32 in SoftAP mode. This created a direct Wi-Fi link to MATLAB without needing the university network, resolved both blockers simultaneously, and let me write the full C++ firmware myself: UDP command parsing, PWM servo control for three motors, and ACK-based handshake logic for reliable delivery. Delivered a working live demo at the Senior Design Expo within two weeks of the pivot.</p>

<h3>MPU-6050 Flex PCB Breakout</h3>

<p>Designed a single-layer flexible PCB breakout for the MPU-6050 6-axis IMU in KiCad. Polyimide substrate, ENIG finish, 0603 and 0201 SMD components. Custom schematic symbol for the MPU-6050 GY-521 module. Laser-cut star profile with silkscreen artwork. Board dimensions: 37.21 × 38.07mm. C1 (100nF decoupling) placed within 2.5mm of VCC pin. LED resistor calculated at 130Ω.</p>
<p>Assembled using syringe solder paste and tape fixturing during reflow. Post-assembly DMM continuity testing isolated a reversed LED polarity fault in the footprint orientation. Root cause documented and corrected in the Rev B schematic. This project is ongoing and actively in progress.</p>

<p>Performed hardware-in-the-loop system identification on hobby servo motors. Arduino swept 1000–2000 μs PWM while reading potentiometer angle feedback via a 3D-printed mechanical coupling at 50 Hz. MATLAB: tfest → 2nd-order TF at 88.8% fit. ZOH discretization at Ts = 0.021 s. pidtune → Kp 14.50, Ki 98.12, Kd 0.14. Closed-loop simulation validated. Gains not deployed to hardware.</p>
