[UC] Indicate activity which generated a dataset

Requirement / Use Case

• As a data publisher, I want to indicate which Activities produced/generated a Dataset.
• As a data consumer, I want to see datasets produced/generated by an Activity.
• As a data consumer, I want to see Activities responsible for producing/generating a Dataset.

Additional context

Currently, this is already supported by Dataset.wasGeneratedBy pointing to an Activity, which can be further described using the PROV-O ontology.

This requires Activities to be identified by IRIs. Also, maybe a part of the external Activity description should be included directly in the MaterialsDCAT-AP metadata record, to be used for search in catalogs?

Examples need to be developed, illustrating the MaterialsDCAT-AP approach.

Open questions

1. Who/where runs a catalog of Activities?
2. Are activities identified by IRIs?

From WG 2026-08-10: Consider activities both as individuals and classes, e.g.

• Dataset XYZ was generated by Microscopy (class)
• Dataset XYZ was generated by Microscopy (individual), done at 2026-08-26T12:12:13, with a specific microscope, by Researcher ABC. What about confidentiality?
  • CWL (workflow language) - can be used to represent workflows
