KT/K5 KUAL does not launch

I followed the instructions here https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking/Legacy/K5-Jailbreak/ as follows but am unable to launch KUAL. I'm on firmware 5.3.7.3

STEPS :
0. Reset device to factory settings.

1. Turned off wifi.
2. Installed kindle-5.4-jailbreak.zip per instructions successfully.
3. Rebooted kindle.
4. Set up the hotfix successfully.*
5. Followed the instructions to install PEKI and MRPI (for modern devices).
6. Rebooted kindle.
7. Clicked KUAL in book list.

RESULT :
The KUAL item in the list is selected for a moment, then the screen refreshes back to the item list. KUAL no longer has the "new" flag, so it knows that I tried to launch it but nothing happened.
The "Troubleshooting" tips at the bottom include "Try restarting the Kindle if the ;log mrpi command is not responding" but I don't know what that is or how I would find out if it's responding.

* I assume it was successful, anyway - there's no information about what success looks like. A bunch of code ran on the screen, it ran through what looked like custom "software update" screens, then rebooted. The boot screen had some text overlay about kindles being slow lol and what I think was text saying to click "close" on the error message that appears once the kindle has booted. I did get the error, and I clicked "close."

I found this list of steps from May #165 (comment) but am stuck on 5 - the file KUAL-KDK-2.0.azw2 is not available on the linked page anymore.

I was in the same situation: Kindle Gen4 Touch, aka K5 with FW 5.3.7.3. I ran the steps as you, but I found the KUAL-KDK-2.0.azw2 on the mobileread forum. It is part of the archive called KUAL-v2.7.37-....tar.xz.
I then

1. Removed the PEKI KUAL stuff from the /documents folder on the device.
2. Added the KUAL-KDK-2.0.azw2 to the /documents folder.
3. Installed the DevCerts from post in your link bz placing them in the device root and heading to settings, then hitting update device.

Now the KUAL book in my library actually starts KUAL. Hope this helps someone.

I'm unsure exactly what this comment means but I think it means to follow the original steps but to also add the DevCerts to the Kindle root directory.

Also, there is a whole new flow on https://kindlemodding.org/ to determine which jailbreak is needed for your device.

Here's my new STR and results :

1. Reset Kindle to wipe old folders.
2. Walk through the wizard on https://kindlemodding.org/
3. Start from https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking/Legacy/K5-Jailbreak/
4. Follow the steps - download kindle-5.4-jailbreak.zip, extract files, move files to kindle root, eject & unplug kindle, perform jailbreak, restart kindle.
5. Set up the hotfix - download Update_hotfix_universal.bin, move to kindle root, eject & unplug kindle, update, run hotfix.
6. Close the Application Error message.
7. Download KUAL | KUAL-v2.7.37-gfcb45b5-20250419.tar.xz | 2025-Apr-19 13:37:00 | 214.0K | from https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=225030
8. Make a directory to unpack these files into - otherwise they'll be loose in your download location.
9. Unpack it with tar -xf KUAL-v2.7.37-gfcb45b5-20250419.tar.xz -C [path/to/destination]
10. Download and extract MRPI for modern devices (kual-mrinstaller-khf.zip).
11. Copy the extensions and mrpackages to the kindle root.
12. From within the KUAL-v2... directory from the mobileread forum, copy the KUAL-KDK-2.0.azw2 to the documents folder on the kindle.
13. Eject kindle.
14. Download DevCerts-20250419-KeyStore.zip from https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4506164&postcount=1295 and unpack the zip.
15. Move all of the .bin files to the kindle root, eject & unplug kindle, then run the kindle's update device.
16. Wait for the kindle to reboot - it takes a while - then click KUAL.

aha found the fix, and have updated the steps in bold above - the trick is to put the .azw2 file into the kindle's document folder. Now I can launch KUAL! Next step, KO reader.
