"Check for banned versions keeps failing" toast blocks quest answer interface

Whenever I open the app, or submit a quest answer, an android toast appears which complains to me about a check for banned versions, but I had to go to the code to read the full text, since the text doesn't even fit in the toast.

This wouldn't otherwise bother me, but since the toast appears at the bottom of the screen, it blocks the quest answer interface. It's especially bad on ex. street name quests, where it blocks the text field completely and I have to wait for the toast to disappear before I can check that the street name is correct.

How to Reproduce
Not sure. It just started happening to me one day, and never stopped.

Expected Behavior
The toast would let me read the full text, and not be in the way of the quest answer interface.

Does it happen in normal StreetComplete?
I wasn't able to make this toast appear at all on normal StreetComplete.

• For how long has it been happening to you (approximately)?
• Are you using some firewall on your device?

Also, when that error shows next time, can you open your regular mobile browser on that same device, and try to open this URL: https://streetcomplete.mnalis.com/streetcomplete/banned_versions.txt

• does it work (showing a text with few SCEE versions), or does it produce some error (and if so, can you screenshot the error)?

Ideally, that warning would not be happening at all (it does not show that warning for me).

But yeah, different position for the toast message would be nice -- but it seems it is no longer possible on newer Androids. It would be nice if it could show whole message at least, but I'm not sure if that possible either without making the message much shorter. 🤔

That is to be expected; SC uses different host in different country, so it is unlikely both would be unreachable at the same time (unless your internet connectivity is completely down).

I tried using SCEE yesterday and the toast didn't appear at all for some reason.

It started a month ago, I took a break from mapping last month during which I didn't open the app at all. I do remember the error happening a month ago when I last used it.

Are you using some firewall on your device?

Only a wireguard interface assigned for some local ip addresses (192.168.1.*) so that shouldn't interfere with it. I had this open yesterday when it worked fine.

As I said, I often switch between cellular network and wifi, so it might happen due to switching networks while the application is already open? If this happens to me again I will try opening the url you linked.

Oh great, at some point Google decided to limit toasts to 2 lines... They have more than enough capacity to break things, it's hard to keep cleaning up.

Don't know if moving to custom multiplatform Toast will make it better or worse (or not change anything), but it seems to be worked on upstream SC: streetcomplete@a6bb27c

Thanks @mnalis! It's a compose element, so it will definitely improve the situation. And it's not locked to a specific position by the OS.
