Feature Request : Live window preview along with app icons

Hello,

Thanks for developing this amazing tool. As far as I understand, the overview only shows app icons and not the actual previews of the apps being used (like Windows 11). Is there any way you could implement that in hyprshell?

Personally, I forked another repo called "hypr-dock" and modified that to add alt-tab functionality which shows both icon and app previews.
I'd like to share that with you guys incase it helps ( or motivates) you guys to develop similar thing in hyprhsell.

This feature was requested a long time ago, #26.

I just didnt have time to implement this.

I could either use the hyprland specific protocoll or use the hyprland plugin that hyprshell uses to display the contents of the windows.

hyprland allows taking screenshot in background without asking for permission, i'm not sure if it allows live window preview. Leaving it here, just incase :

it does with pipewire which is what obs uses even kde's alt-tab uses pipewire to get the windows video stream.

Hi, I tried it but the thumbnail didn't load for me for some reason do I need to have an option in my config? Or do I need to remove something?

You need to set some env vars.

If you run using systemd you need to add the following to systemctl --user edit hyprshell.service:

Thanks for the response! It works. I would say hyprshell is perfect now. Any further improvements would just be stopping the thumbnail from tearing in the alt tab menu and a video stream would rather than a thumbnail would be better (cause the app looks like a slideshow when it's playing a video ) and I don't know if it's my css but the app icon no longer appears. But other than that it's perfect.

App icons should still appear above the thumbnail. Maybe you need to change your styles.css. The hyprshell branch includes new styles inside the packaging/share/themes folder.

The refresh rate will be configurable in the future.
