Add unit test for widgets

I need to bite the bullet and sit down and write unit tests for widgets. 

**Describe the solution you'd like**
Have unit tests for widgets and have them run when a pull request is created

**Acceptance Criteria**

- [ ] write unit tests
- [ ] create git hub actions that check if all pass
